There are a number of options available, what in the selection of timber used for furniture, and each will add its own color and features to your project. Which choice is best for you will partly depend on what type of furniture you build what is your budget and where you are.
For example, the wood will you decide to build an Adirondack chair than likely what you would use to build secure a steamer chair or a different front spindlePorch rocker. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, Western Red Cedar is widely available, while other species such as cypress is more likely in the southeastern United States.
I want to use overview of several of the most common wood choice for outdoor furniture, and some of their advantages and disadvantages.
You need special consideration in the preparation of outdoor furniture made of wood. Unprotected wood, regardless of the type usedeventually deteriorate if not exposed to rain, wind and sun. Some species are more durable than others, but they should guarantee everyone in some way to their maximum useful life to be protected.
Teak
In the minds of many people from teak is the premium choice for outdoor furniture. Teak is exceptionally strong and is well suited for the lean parts of a steamer chair, for example.
Teak is very oily, which makes them resistant to moisture, insects and fungi, but it also makesnot suitable for painted or stained finished. Teak weather is a silver, if left unfinished. Teak, with a tropical hardwood, but is increasingly rare, very expensive, and will probably not be stored at your local lumberyard.
Due to the high level, if silica is found in teak, it will be very hard on cutting tools. In fact, carbide or diamond tools are a necessity. Due to the hardness of the wood pre-drilled, which have to nail or screw holes. The oils in the teakBonding even more complicated. The surfaces must be bonded with solvent such as acetone, to remove the oil, so wipe the glue properly on the bond markets in the woods.
While teak is a beautiful wood, and particularly suitable for furniture, its cost may make it impractical for your project, and the difficulty of working with it should be, especially by the less experienced or noviceSchreiner.
Shorea
Shorea is a newcomer on the American market. With the influx of furniture from Indonesia in the last ten years or so imported, it is becoming more common. Shorea is a good alternative to teak will, many of the same properties. While imported Shorea furniture can be purchased relatively inexpensively, shopping Shorea Wood likely will prove more difficult, because it is only on select hardwoodsCompanies.
Mahogany
Mahogany, as is teak, has long been the choice material for boat builders, weather-resistant due to its excellent properties. This is the dark red heart wood, not the lighter sapwood.
Three kinds of mahogany are widely available - Honduras, Africa and the Philippines. Honduras mahogany and Africa are primarily used for furniture and other outdoor applications, while Philippine mahogany, with its coarse open grain, mainly forInterior doors and trim.
Mahogany is an excellent choice for outdoor furniture, and usually much cheaper than teak. Mahogany can be glued with standard wood glue, also holds fasteners, machinery and surfaces very easily. Mahogany finishes suitable for paint, stain, varnish and oil. Unfinished, mahogany is also a silvery gray weather.
Cedar
Cedar is very desirable, rot-proof properties of softwood. The two most commonTypes of available Western Red Cedar and Eastern white cedar. Both types are easy to hold fasteners well and are strong enough for most outdoor furniture applications.
Cedar contains natural oils that resist rot and insects, as well as provide that pleasant cedar aroma. Cedar is the wood of choice in many parts of the country for many outdoor applications, such as decks, furniture, fencing, shingles and siding.
Of the two species, western redcedar exhibits better weather resistant properties if left unfinished. Both species, however, take paint and stain well. Because cedar is a softer wood, it is more susceptible to dents and dings, and is less suitable for a clear finish such as spar varnish. If you want a clear finish on your cedar furniture, an oil finish is recommended.
Cedar is usually less expensive than many of the other options available, and because of this, is an excellent choice for a Project.
